When the Sun Dies or: A Pile of Story Hooks for Grimdark RPGs

Following up on my post last week about how I approach introing Sun Rot to new players and communal storytelling via dice, I wanted to share some story hooks that I’ve written. While I wrote these with my particular vision of Sun Rot in mind, I’ve left them purposefully loose and agnostic of any actual setting/system so maybe if you stumble across this you can use them in whatever your current game obsession is.

I’ve used some of these already at my table while others I haven’t had the chance to yet. They are all loose ideas intended to act as jumping off points for you and your players’ imaginations to carry forward and tell a story with. Alternately, maybe they spark an idea in your head for a hook you want to run with instead. Either way, I hope you get something out of this, whether that’s some story hooks or inspiration to create your own.

I also used this as an opportunity to try my hand at creating a more visual presentation than just writing them up here in plain text. Maybe more will come of this in the future and manifest itself as something in the physical world. As usual, only time will tell where this all goes; I’m just along for the ride. I do greatly love holding gaming materials in hand at the table. I think there’s like a couple reasons for that – one part is my job has me sitting in front of screens all day, and having a break from that is a good thing both mentally and for my eyeballs.

There’s also some nostalgia mixed in there though, while I’m being honest. Having gaming material laid out in front of you as you play just feels like the early days of getting into TTPGS and wargames for me. Don’t stare too long into the nostalgia void though, it’ll suck you in and that’s not good for anyone. But a little bit as a treat is always nice, especially if you’re able to physically gather with your friends to play games.

I’ve also included a file below you can download and print yourself, if you’re like me and like holding stuff in your hands at the table is your particular jam. I’ve been working on some other non-Sun Rot related stuff I’m going to share soon (maybe next week even!) that I’m very excited about. I feel something has been really on fire inside of me lately; by playing games like Sun Rot, by getting to gather with friends to throw dice around or kitbash, by watching all the inspiring work going on within the community or just talking about and being hyped on games and miniatures and all this hobby encompasses.
